Well finally the heat has come. Yesterday it was 35°C /95°F in Siena, today it could get to 38°C/100°F.
It has been a strange summer so far. June was hot and July instead was cold and rainy. Normally, from July until mid August the temps are in the low 30’s/ mid 80’s but this year we barely hit 30 in that time span.
So we are enjoying the heat while we have it. That means following traditional cooling methods of keeping all of the shutters closed while the sun is out and opening everything when the sun is down.
We also eat differently. Lighter foods mainly. Normally, we eat things like sliced Prosciutto, fresh cheese, fruit (lots of fruit!) and of course, Panzanella:
Day old bread
1 large red onion
2 large salad tomatoes
olive oil, salt, pepper, vinegar
Little else is needed beside some day old bread. Slice thickly and put to soak in a basin of water. Finely slice the onion and two tomatoes into a dish and add 2 handfuls of chopped basil.
Squeeze the bread dry, add to the vegetables, plus olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. Stir to combine all the ingredients thoroughly.
